Artifact- Excavation

Egypt Excavation I grabbed my paintbrush and a pick and head for the excavation site, where we had already dug up many ancient Egyptian artifacts like vases and pieces of beautifully crafted pottery. It was a hot day here in Egypt, sweat was already pouring off my face. The heat reminded me of the time we dug in an area that was once an ocean when I was a little girl. I had found my first fossil of an old fish. I saw a shiny object in the ground at my feet. Excited, I effortlessly dug the coin out. However (I did absolute dating ), it was modern since it said “ made in 1994” on it. Someone said that they had dropped that. I prefer relative dating to absolute dating since I get to examine the artifact and compare it to things that we already know the date of (I know, I wouldn’t know the exact date, but at least I’ll have an idea of the date). Once, I remember, at my home, I decided to find out more about my mysterious neighbor by doing the only thing I knew how to, kitchen...

The Chinese Emperor

An Emperor, a Ruler, . . . a Tyrant? The first emperor of China. Was feared by enemies. Had an iron fist policy. The not so nice military genius. Ch’in Shih Huang Ti, the first emperor of China, ran the country, but wasn’t China’s favorite. Of course, since he made China so much bigger, was powerful and so cruel, he had many enemies. However, he didn’t fear them. China was becoming like a prison camp for many, where they got tortured and killed. Executions happened often, sometimes in slow, painful ways where they were whipped until death or parts of their body were cut off. He took in families, including young children, as slaves. He was very powerful and was well protected with guards and many weapons. Ordinary people feared him so much, enemies feared him too. Imagine how terribly they would be punished. Ch’in Shih Huang Ti ruled with an iron fist policy. He killed his favorite son for disagreeing with him when he wanted to burn ancient books because he believed himself ...

Adding and Multiplying Integers

Image
Here is a model of the expression we are solving. The expression is 4 - (-3). in math, we are working on integers, so me and my partner, Rahini, decided to to model it like this; a chip model. The black little ovals represent one positive, and the not filled in ovals represent one negative. In step one, there are four ovals, so we start with positive four. In step two, we bring in the negative three, however, there is nothing there to subtract it from. The solution is to create zero pairs by adding one positive underneath it, because one plus negative one would equal 0. This works because the expression is saying take away negative three, and now you have something to take it away from. Then we crossed out three of the white ovals, because we needed to take away negative three. Then you are left with 7 black ovals, so 7 is the difference.  Here is a another model of an expression- soon to become an equation. The expression was -4 * (-2). This was a little harder, as it...

Science- Fishing Rods

Image
In science, we had a task. To make fishing rods and win the fishing derby! Not any kind of rods though,  we had to make electromagnet fishing rods! Me and my partner had decided on a plan like this... We were going to have is work like this. The batteries would be on the edge of the wooden rod, then there would be the negative and positive wires extending out from the battery packs. The positive wire was attached to one end of the wire which was wrapped around six bolts. Six bolts would have more surface area, helping us pick up more items. Then we had the negative wire attached to a paper clip that had been taped down to the wooden rod. The plan was that the other end on the wire which had been wrapped around the bolts to also be taped down on the wooden rod, but right under the paper clip with a little piece peeking out, so that when we pushed the paper clip down, electricity could flow through (making the paper clip a switch). That didn't actually work out that great, tho...

Unit 4 Story 2

The Typical Height of a 6th Grader

What is the typical height of a 6th grader? That is the burning question we have been working on for a long time. The data that we received was from 142 students, so we decided that first we would calculate the mean of the data set. Mathematically, the mean was the average, so we added all of the data together and got the sum of 8656. We divided 8656 by 142, because there were 142 students who had provided the data. The quotient of this equation was 60. 9577464789 inches. However, the range was actually quite large, it was 20 inches. For example. There were two people who were 72 inches tall, and the closest to them was 70 inches, and that was only one person, so that probably had a big effect on the data. So, I decided to look at the mode as well, to see what was the most recurring height in sixth grade. As a result, 61 inches was the mode by a long shot. That was very close to the mean, if estimated, the mean would be 61 inches. In fact, I would say that the mode is 61 inches, b...

My Greek Myth

Teardrops as Rain . The wind blew a gentle breeze as adoring women watched that boastful man, Nereus, climb the highest tree, Zeus’s sacred one. Helios’s chariot was high in the air and going strong. However, the heavy frame of Nereus couldn’t climb upon the fragile branches for long. A branch cracked, causing Nereus to fall The wind started howling and the shocked girls ran away. The sky darkened with leaves rustling in the air. The air was whipping Nereus. Lighting lit up the sky and a voice boomed so loud that Nereus fell backward again. “You have disrupted this special place. You were boasting to make wood nymphs love you, so from now on you shall never be able to make another mortal fall in love with you!” Zeus boomed and thunder crackled. “Be gone!” Zeus yelled and Nereus did run. With his whole body twitching with fear. From that day, he hadn’t boasted again.    *** Hephaestus, god of forgery, tried, he truly did. He ma...

Water Project- Weeks 1-4

Image
Week 1: Last weekend Jordyn, Lane, and I started making our flyers, and then we printed them out. We rolled it up, and tied it up with blue string, after that we went strolling in my friends' neighborhood, and put the flyers in the mailboxes. People started asking us on what we were doing so we got to tell them. After that, we started to plan out and do last minute checking on the presentations for lower grades. Week 2: This week has worked out really well. We got all of the planning and creating completed. We have multiple presentations coming up now. We have a bake sale coming up. And we are ready! The previous week we had given out flyers to Jordyn's neighborhood to spread awareness. This may have worked in some places but not others. This week, since we know that we have already done the flyers, we decided that we needed to start on the presentations and little pamphlets to hand out. I started working on the presentations at home on school days. We all worked on d...

Greek Activity Reflection

Greek Activities Reflection 2015 Think about your participation and involvement during the six meetings of your Greek Activity. Thoughtfully complete the reflection below. Did I work cooperatively with my group? Below Approaching Meets Exemplary Here are some examples that displayed how I worked cooperatively with my group. Me and my group were extreme temple makeover, and we had to design, assemble, paint and bring our temple to life in just six 70 minute sessions! It was quite a task and we barely finished. At the designing stage, we all had a temple in our minds, and we all had moments were we agreed or disagreed. So we really had to work together in our group of four to make sure that the temple was perfect for everyone. And our temples were really different. One was imaged as a temple for Zeus (lightning bolts) while the other was Aphrodite (flowers and hearts). You get the picture. At the assembling stage, it was difficult to carve cardboard and get everyt...
