MDS Reflection

When I think about modern day slavery, I still have trouble believing it. Here is a fact: there could be 21 to 49 million slaves on this planet right now, but I wasn't aware. We are so vastly naive about this issue that we assume that slavery pretty much ended back when the emancipation proclamation was issued. We are, however, in a paradox; the difference between back then and today is that slavery is now illegal. Before, it was legal to own slaves, and the underground railway was to illegally escape. Now, ironically, slavery is illegal in every part of the world, and yet it exists everywhere, just underground. I just assumed hat since it was illegal, it wasn't an issue anymore. All over the world, people, including children, can be tricked or forced into slavery; Masters can drown them in endless debt or take their documentation. All of them are unpaid, under the threat of violence and cannot leave.  I tried to blame it on the greed of the masters of those slaves, but then re...

Globalization Unit Reflection

Image
Analysis Paste your political cartoon here. What aspect of globalization your cartoon is criticising? (Highlight one) cultural/social              technological/environmental             political/economic Which visual techniques or literary devices (from the list above) did you use in your cartoon? Explain why you used it and why you think it is effective. We used the ship and plane, which are well known ways to visit other countries, as symbols of globalization, to show that America is using globalization to reach other countries. All of the American trash is flowing to clean shores with the ship and the man representing USA that is shooting US ideas at the island is on the ship. Globalization is fueling this process. Other than “globalization”, we also had a label of “US Air Force”. This was mainly for clarity that USA was the one behind this. T...

Artifact- Excavation

Egypt Excavation I grabbed my paintbrush and a pick and head for the excavation site, where we had already dug up many ancient Egyptian artifacts like vases and pieces of beautifully crafted pottery. It was a hot day here in Egypt, sweat was already pouring off my face. The heat reminded me of the time we dug in an area that was once an ocean when I was a little girl. I had found my first fossil of an old fish. I saw a shiny object in the ground at my feet. Excited, I effortlessly dug the coin out. However (I did absolute dating ), it was modern since it said “ made in 1994” on it. Someone said that they had dropped that. I prefer relative dating to absolute dating since I get to examine the artifact and compare it to things that we already know the date of (I know, I wouldn’t know the exact date, but at least I’ll have an idea of the date). Once, I remember, at my home, I decided to find out more about my mysterious neighbor by doing the only thing I knew how to, kitchen...

The Odysessy

The Chinese Emperor

An Emperor, a Ruler, . . . a Tyrant? The first emperor of China. Was feared by enemies. Had an iron fist policy. The not so nice military genius. Ch’in Shih Huang Ti, the first emperor of China, ran the country, but wasn’t China’s favorite. Of course, since he made China so much bigger, was powerful and so cruel, he had many enemies. However, he didn’t fear them. China was becoming like a prison camp for many, where they got tortured and killed. Executions happened often, sometimes in slow, painful ways where they were whipped until death or parts of their body were cut off. He took in families, including young children, as slaves. He was very powerful and was well protected with guards and many weapons. Ordinary people feared him so much, enemies feared him too. Imagine how terribly they would be punished. Ch’in Shih Huang Ti ruled with an iron fist policy. He killed his favorite son for disagreeing with him when he wanted to burn ancient books because he believed himself ...

Harriet Tubman

Image
Harriet Tubman was an incredibly brave and kindhearted lady who was the savior of many slaves in the American Revolutionary War. She made differences and effected change and that is one thing I will describe with more detail to you. However, things didn’t go perfectly and she had struggles on the way, and I will tell you about them. Finally, I am going to take a trip into Harriet’s shoes and imagine what it was like to be her. Keep on reading and understand Harriet Tubman’s greatness. Harriet Tubman was one lady who made a huge difference. Without her, slaves may be here at present day. I will tell you about what she did and how. She took on a very dangerous job of being a railroad "conductor" in a secret underground railroad to lead slaves to safety. It crossed Maryland and went all the to Pennsylvania. The Quakers and Abolitionists were there so that the slaves were safe (Quakers and Abolitionists are against slavery). She risked her life multiple times and even for h...
