Email to Parents

Dear Mom and Dad,  I hope that you can come to my science design fair on December 17th from 1:40 to 2:10. I am really excited! My group and I have researched tornadoes for our natural disaster unit, and now we are working on creating an answer to our driving question- "How can we save the world?". The problem we chose to help was, "Before a tornado, people don't have much warning." As a result, we found an app that can tell you the weather anywhere, and sends notifications to your phone if there is a possible tornado. We decided to create an advertisement on it, with a model and pamphlet. Our designs will be set up in core classes, so I will give you further information.  I would like to tell you what we have come up with so far, and would love to hear your feedback. any tweaks, issues or things you like would be useful for me to know. My teacher also wants you to write your feedback as an email to me, so that I can share my group.  I can't w...

Similarity

Image
Are B and C similar? B and C would be similar, because first, the angles would all be corresponding (or the same measure). If A and B have corresponding angles as well as A and C, all of them would have to have the same angle measures on each sides. They also have corresponding side lengths , because they all have a scale factor between them. C is already known to be able to shrink into the same shape as A, so since B can stretch into A, C could shrink down to the size of triangle B. The scale factor in the example for B to C is 4, because A is half of C, while B is half of A. That means that B is 1/4 of C. Since the proportions are the same, there is a possible scale factor, there are corresponding angles and side, B and C would have to be similar.

September- Overcoming Challenges Pancakes would be a pretty straight forward breakfast to cook, right? However, things went wrong for my group when none of us could flip a pancake without completely ruining it. It surprised us, because at first we thought that we were just unexperienced, but soon realised that it wasn't the case. Our batter was much too thin, because we hadn't quite followed the recipe. We hadn't communicated and accidentally put in milk twice. We were careful after that incident, and we haven't had any problems with that since. On my plate, most of the pancakes looked like "roadkill", but we did get one good pancake in! October- Awesome Taste This is a picture of all of the foods we made in the breakfast competition, and they all were unique in their own way. I really liked my breakfast though, because it's easy and creative. I made the egg stuffed bell pepper, and those two ingredients went together really well, al...

Effective Communication Reflection

I have a little brother and I love him, a lot. But sometimes we can get into huge fights, and we expect the other one to cave. When no one caves, we both yell at each other. Since both of us do piano, neither of us like going first. Either we have homework that we forgot about because of school and everything, or we want to keep doing whatever we are doing. This Saturday, 15 minutes before our class started, I told him that he needed to go first. He didn't want to, because he was watching youtube. Instead of fighting/making up reasons/yelling, I decided to act mature and accept, just to help him out.  I used the communication tool acting calm and as a role model. It should make him respect me more. The relief on his face was also kind of nice to see too. I did in the end go first, but at least we weren't fighting like usual. I will use this on my family and friends who I fight with. Next Saturday, this is an option, but at the very least, I have leverage against him because si...

Interactive Mapmaker

Image
In an interactive mapmaker, I discovered something new about India. The purple areas are prone to geological (ie earthquakes) and hydrological (ie tsunamis) natural disasters. It shows that a majority of this country is covered in blue, with the border from other countries is more or less covered with purple. Central India appears to be okay, but I am inferring that the areas close to the ocean are prone to floods (not many tsunamis). It also surprises me that there are bits of orange at the edge, since orange means drought. This is right next to hydrological disasters, and yet there is still drought.

Plate Tectonics Outline

Observations and Inferences: An observation is seeing something in a piece of data An inference is making an educated guess or drawing a conclusion from your observation Continental Drift Theory: Observed a map and saw that Africa and South America looked like puzzle pieces, making an inference that the continental drift happened All the continents were once connected the super continent was called Pangea and then drifted apart This theory was created by Alfred Wegener, but no one believed him until sea floors were mapped                                                                                                                                 ...

Tennis Reflection

Are you in a forward facing ready position? I am in a ready position, with my chest facing forward, however I need to bend my knees a bit more. I also think I need to be in a more flexible position. When the ball comes, do you move by dropping your racket foot back? Yes, I drop my foot back and then step forward with my other foot. Do you have a steady wrist? Yes, because my racket swings through smoothly. Do you start stroke low, then swing up and over the ball to impart topspin to the ball? I do start low and swing up, but I hit the ball at a lower level here. Two things I think I am doing well with my forehand swing are… Keeping my wrist firm, because my racket doesn't really waver much. It just glides through and hits the ball. Another thing is that I am prepared to hit the ball at waist level, although this ball was a little lower than what I had anticipated. I started going higher with my racket, but then lowered it quickly so that I didn't m...

Demography: So What?

Image
Demography is a really long word. And a complicated subject too. It took me a long time to understand and use. Now though, I do understand it, and have learned a lot about it. But here is the thing: if I don't know how it relates to my life, then why does all that matter? And I want it all to matter, plus, I think I understand how it relates to my life. Question number one... 1. How are demographics relevant to your life? Demographics can determine how I live, how my life will turn out and how I will be like. One thing is about how I live in a developed country, and I am so lucky to be able to do that. I have clean water at my finger tips, great medical care and am clean. I am healthy, with no worries about getting very sick or starving to death. I live in Singapore, which is one of the best places to live, because everyone has something to live with. Another thing is how the Singaporean population is negative growth. However, since they are negative growth, a government poli...

Anushka- Plate Boundary Exersize

Me and my partner Ela researched how the Andes were created. The video above is a stop motion of how they were created. The oceanic Nazca plate converged into the continental South American plate, and then they pushed so hard against each other, that the land was  pushed upward, forming the Andes along the side of South America.

Age of Ocean Floor Pre-Test

1. Along the edges of the plates of North America, South America, Africa and Eurasia. I think this because of the Mid Atlantic Ridge. When molten lava comes up, it forms a new layer, and making it bigger and pushing the older rocks to the side. It is in between all of the continents that I stated above, so the rocks that are being moved would be pushed to the edges of these plates. Since the Mid Atlantic ridge is new in the middle, the rocks get older as you get further away from it on either side. So, the oldest parts must be on the edges of the continents I stated. 2. No, I don't think so. I say this because one of the oceans (likely the Atlantic) was created through seafloor spreading, which means that it must be newer than other oceans.I know that some oceans had formed a very long time ago. The Pacific ocean is very large compared to other oceans, which I why I think that it slowly got bigger and bigger overtime, but since it is so big, it must have been around much longer t...

What are common properties of all polygons? Polygons are closed shapes that have at least three straight sides, angles and vertices. They are also planar, which means they are 2D. Many shapes are polygons, as long as they don't have intersections or rounded edges. Here are a few examples of polygons and non-polygons. What does the measure in degrees tell you about an angle? If it is an angle from a polygon, it can tell you more about that shape. For example, maybe if you knew that a triangle had right angle, you automatically know that the triangle is a right triangle. Also, you can know whether it is obtuse, right, acute or straight without seeing the angle itself.  What are some common benchmark angles? Benchmarks are angles simpler angles to make, like a 90 degree angle. Here are a few in addition to that. 45 degrees, 180 degrees, 270 degrees, 360 degrees, 30 degrees, 60 degrees. They would be the most popular. What strategies can be used to find angl...

Week 2

1.  What is the difference between an Observation and an Inference? An observation is information you find using your senses, like colour (qualitative) and size (quantitive) while and inference is an educated guess that you make using the observations or even personal experience. Inferences come from observations, and they might be incorrect. Observations must be correct, or they are just inferences.  2.  How can inferences and observations be related?  You use your observations to help you make an inference. You can't making inference without knowing the facts. For instance, you cannot guess something is edible without seeing, smelling and feeling it. So observations can lead to inferences, connecting the two. 3.  Why are both observations and inferences important in science? Without them, you will not know or be able to figure out what is happening. If you don't know what is happening, you won't be able to do anything, because you even nee...

Artifact- Excavation

Egypt Excavation I grabbed my paintbrush and a pick and head for the excavation site, where we had already dug up many ancient Egyptian artifacts like vases and pieces of beautifully crafted pottery. It was a hot day here in Egypt, sweat was already pouring off my face. The heat reminded me of the time we dug in an area that was once an ocean when I was a little girl. I had found my first fossil of an old fish. I saw a shiny object in the ground at my feet. Excited, I effortlessly dug the coin out. However (I did absolute dating ), it was modern since it said “ made in 1994” on it. Someone said that they had dropped that. I prefer relative dating to absolute dating since I get to examine the artifact and compare it to things that we already know the date of (I know, I wouldn’t know the exact date, but at least I’ll have an idea of the date). Once, I remember, at my home, I decided to find out more about my mysterious neighbor by doing the only thing I knew how to, kitchen...

The Chinese Emperor

An Emperor, a Ruler, . . . a Tyrant? The first emperor of China. Was feared by enemies. Had an iron fist policy. The not so nice military genius. Ch’in Shih Huang Ti, the first emperor of China, ran the country, but wasn’t China’s favorite. Of course, since he made China so much bigger, was powerful and so cruel, he had many enemies. However, he didn’t fear them. China was becoming like a prison camp for many, where they got tortured and killed. Executions happened often, sometimes in slow, painful ways where they were whipped until death or parts of their body were cut off. He took in families, including young children, as slaves. He was very powerful and was well protected with guards and many weapons. Ordinary people feared him so much, enemies feared him too. Imagine how terribly they would be punished. Ch’in Shih Huang Ti ruled with an iron fist policy. He killed his favorite son for disagreeing with him when he wanted to burn ancient books because he believed himself ...

Adding and Multiplying Integers

Image
Here is a model of the expression we are solving. The expression is 4 - (-3). in math, we are working on integers, so me and my partner, Rahini, decided to to model it like this; a chip model. The black little ovals represent one positive, and the not filled in ovals represent one negative. In step one, there are four ovals, so we start with positive four. In step two, we bring in the negative three, however, there is nothing there to subtract it from. The solution is to create zero pairs by adding one positive underneath it, because one plus negative one would equal 0. This works because the expression is saying take away negative three, and now you have something to take it away from. Then we crossed out three of the white ovals, because we needed to take away negative three. Then you are left with 7 black ovals, so 7 is the difference.  Here is a another model of an expression- soon to become an equation. The expression was -4 * (-2). This was a little harder, as it...

Science- Fishing Rods

Image
In science, we had a task. To make fishing rods and win the fishing derby! Not any kind of rods though,  we had to make electromagnet fishing rods! Me and my partner had decided on a plan like this... We were going to have is work like this. The batteries would be on the edge of the wooden rod, then there would be the negative and positive wires extending out from the battery packs. The positive wire was attached to one end of the wire which was wrapped around six bolts. Six bolts would have more surface area, helping us pick up more items. Then we had the negative wire attached to a paper clip that had been taped down to the wooden rod. The plan was that the other end on the wire which had been wrapped around the bolts to also be taped down on the wooden rod, but right under the paper clip with a little piece peeking out, so that when we pushed the paper clip down, electricity could flow through (making the paper clip a switch). That didn't actually work out that great, tho...

Unit 4 Story 2

The Typical Height of a 6th Grader

What is the typical height of a 6th grader? That is the burning question we have been working on for a long time. The data that we received was from 142 students, so we decided that first we would calculate the mean of the data set. Mathematically, the mean was the average, so we added all of the data together and got the sum of 8656. We divided 8656 by 142, because there were 142 students who had provided the data. The quotient of this equation was 60. 9577464789 inches. However, the range was actually quite large, it was 20 inches. For example. There were two people who were 72 inches tall, and the closest to them was 70 inches, and that was only one person, so that probably had a big effect on the data. So, I decided to look at the mode as well, to see what was the most recurring height in sixth grade. As a result, 61 inches was the mode by a long shot. That was very close to the mean, if estimated, the mean would be 61 inches. In fact, I would say that the mode is 61 inches, b...

Unit 4

My Greek Myth

Teardrops as Rain . The wind blew a gentle breeze as adoring women watched that boastful man, Nereus, climb the highest tree, Zeus’s sacred one. Helios’s chariot was high in the air and going strong. However, the heavy frame of Nereus couldn’t climb upon the fragile branches for long. A branch cracked, causing Nereus to fall The wind started howling and the shocked girls ran away. The sky darkened with leaves rustling in the air. The air was whipping Nereus. Lighting lit up the sky and a voice boomed so loud that Nereus fell backward again. “You have disrupted this special place. You were boasting to make wood nymphs love you, so from now on you shall never be able to make another mortal fall in love with you!” Zeus boomed and thunder crackled. “Be gone!” Zeus yelled and Nereus did run. With his whole body twitching with fear. From that day, he hadn’t boasted again.    *** Hephaestus, god of forgery, tried, he truly did. He ma...
