Health Movie

This is our health video that talks about how food advertisements can be deceiving and lead us to make bad choices in terms of health, even though we think we're making the right choice.

RLA Persuasive Speech

Image
In RLA, we had a persuasive speech unit, where we picked a topic, researched a little bit and tried to persuade the audience. In the end, we presented our speeches to the class; my final product is above. The topic I chose was uniforms, and I argued that uniforms where very beneficial to the school and we should be happy we have them as well as encourage others.

RLA Podcast: Dress Codes

Reflection: We just finished up the journalism unit, which was unique in comparison to others, because we had a lot more freedom, which seldom happens. It was fun getting to meet a real journalist and try it out on our own, with interviews and a podcast at the end. I am most proud of the research that I did on my topic, including the interviews. I feel that I asked many follow up questions and found good information that I could use in my podcast. I also was able to find reliable sources to draw statistics from. My interviews let me learn about SAS as well, because Mrs. Mehrbach told me a few things about uniforms that I was surprised to hear. One of the biggest challenges I had was finding a good topic, because I not only wanted something that had an impact on me/SAS, but also needed something researchable. The first few topics I tried out had few good sources in all of the databases I tried, so I eventually settled with uniforms. Also, Garageband was hard for me to use, because...

Fitness Plan Decide Sheet

My fitness goal is to improve my cardio and stamina so that I can run my mile faster. This will be useful in many sports so that I don't get tired as fast. I will run 2-3 days a week for 30-45 minutes each time, and I will know that my plan is working when my mile time is below 7:50 (now it is 8:05). Here is the link to my plan sheet: https://docs.google.com/document/d/13CZYllVLbfXb2C4-tooPqGIXiUQmkMa47Pr7B_od08g/edit

My Application Essay Journey

Dear Mrs. Windust and Mr. Arleth, It’s been a great journey to reaching the finished product of my application essay. For me, it was one of the most difficult writing styles to try. I learned a lot from this process about writing and myself as a writer. My piece definitely isn’t perfect, but I’m proud of how I was able to show something that was unique to me. I came up with this idea while my grandma was skyping me, but I was setting myself up to be the perfect character and my essay had little meaning to me as a writer. However, by reading Mrs. Windust’s essay and “Armpit Hair”, I learned how to set myself up as imperfect. The whole point of my essay was how I realised that I was not being a good person and I changed, and that change is a big part of who I am now. If I hadn’t had mentor texts and guidance, I wouldn’t have had the element in my essay that I’m most pleased with. Here's an excerpt from my essay where I am the...let's say antihero. " I used to imagine...

Ellis Island Reflection

1. How do you think people felt upon reaching Ellis Island? People were likely excited to be in a new country, and hopeful to start a new life there. I think that seeing the statue of Liberty must have been an incredible feeling. They were probably very relieved to reach America, but also exhausted from their long trip. If anything, they probably wanted to go rest. 2. What do you think the screening process was like in the immigration hall? It must have been nerve-racking and panicky because it would be so easy to be deported. Also, they had to wait for a long time to get to their turn, so they must have been tired, hungry and thirsty. On top of the stress and exhaustion, it must have been a difficult time. 3. How did you feel when you arrived at the classroom and learned about your fate? When I arrived, I was confused before anything else. Slowly, I was a bit nervous, like why am deported? Did I do something wrong? Eventually, I was a bit disappointed, because I didn't get ...

Letter to Bartolomé de Las Casas

Dear Bartolomé, I'm glad they have allowed this last letter. As your servant, you and I have gone through plenty. I do hope you are well. By order of the Spanish crown, I have been taken away from you. However, something has been troubling me for a while, which is the encomienda system. I must keep this short, but I want you to know that it is unjust. I know that living under his Highness King Ferdinand's Spanish Empire, you have come to believe that it is okay to treat my people and I, the Tainos, poorly. Taxing us and forcing us to do labour is similar to saying we are sub people. Yet, you know what your pastor used to say, we are all created equal under the God's eyes. Us Natives, or Indians as you call us, also have two eyes, 10 fingers and two feet. Just like you. Our treatment is not what God would have wanted, and I know that you know that, even though you looked up to Christopher Columbus before. Please give my final words to you some thought, and I hope sha...

Reliability, Bias, Inferences

Image
This is a Chupa Chups advertisement for a sugar-free lollipop. I know that there is a lollipop from this brand that is in fact sugar free. It uses a lot of different artificial sweeteners, such as splenda and aspartame. I think that the source is reliable, because such a big company couldn't tweak information on something so blunt, and the ingredients are very clear. Of course, however, there is bias, because it's an advertisement and they're trying to sell their products. Otherwise, the risk of artificial sweeteners (another perspective) would be mentioned. I can infer that they are trying to sell this to people who love candy, but want ot watch their weight. I think that this ad is using a creative way to promote its sugar free products. Instead of body shaming or guilt tripping, they use this so that people don't stop buying their products all together as a result of guilt.

Letter to My Younger Self

Image
D ear Anushka, If you see your mother’s foundation, leave it ALONE. I know, I know, it’s not easy to be different. But if you do pick up the foundation, you will inevitably try it on. Then you’ll want a little more. And then- okay. I’m getting ahead of ourselves. I’ll tell you about it a little later. You’re a good kid; pretty smart, loyal and trustworthy. For a 1st grader, you’re pretty mature. You push in chairs, finish your homework and have never gone to the principal. Here's a quote from the book twilight, a book you will eventually read and love, “I was born 30 and get more middle-aged every year.” Can you relate? Creekside Elementary is small, but still sweet. You know, with the green trees, flowers and creek, which was actually more of a stream. You never miss an opportunity to tell anyone that. You’ve met some good friends; Emi, Marib and Yasmeen are quirky, funny and cool. You know that though. Yet, inside of the school, there aren’t too many dark-s...

PE Goal 2016/17

“I want to improve my mile time by at least 20 seconds the end of second quarter by going running for longer times in my neighbourhood, so I can build up my stamina and more fit.”

Health and RLA Feature Article

Image
Body image. It affects girls around the globe, and there is one main culprit. Previously, you both know that I had written a social issues story that tied in with body image. It matters to me, so I decided to write a feature article about it. There is a reason that I'm writing about body image. Did you know that for the first time this year, two of my classes joined together to create one big assignment for us? Try and guess which class joined with RLA. It's the one you would never think of; it is PE! In health class (which is a part of PE where we learn about wellness), we were going to write an article about a topic that came up often in teenagers. Meanwhile, in RLA, we were going to write a non-fiction article too. So for the past few weeks, I've researched and written about body image. I have put in a lot of work; like choosing a topic and slant, finding evidence to support my ideas as well as understand my topic and putting that information into an article/essay. ...

Project Adventure Reflection

In PE, we just finished up the project adventure unit. Its main focus is collaboration, and one my tasks was to create a game with a group of people. Name: Crawlers Rules: this game is similar to four corners. First, the teacher will close their eyes and everyone else will run around in the gym. The gym must be rectangular and have four corners. After 10-20 seconds, the teacher will yell "STOP!". Everyone will have reach the nearest corner as soon as possible, and after waiting five seconds, the teacher will point at a corner. Whoever is in that corner has to go down on their hands and knees, starting a new round. However, this time, (in addition to the corners) the crawlers will chase anyone that's up, and if you're tagged by one, you also have to go down on your hands and knees. The object of the game is to be the last one standing. Notes: if the teacher points at a corner before you reach one, you'll be out. Also, if you are a crawler, you can't get bac...

What is Normal?

"Perfect" Blurb

Isabella had a shiny, perfect life up until reality suddenly settled in. Her dad was suddenly squeezed out of her life, and her mom went into a frenzy. Looking at them, you would have no idea what was happening to their family, but they were barely skimming the surface of sanity. But then Isabella finds an anaesthetic to the grief. A life-changing anaesthetic. But sometimes, life doesn't need to get any more complicated. Isabella has been binging and purging ever since, to push everything away, and to keep all of the trouble away. However, this anaesthetic has too many side-effects, ones that her mom starts to notice. Isabella won't stop until she achieves "perfect", but what is the value of "perfect"? Is it really all everyone says it is?

Math HW Videos

1. Sampling methods have a biased and unbiased side to them; to make an inference for the population, methods should be representative. 2. To make an inference with multiple samples, you can find the mean of the data you collected. If you 13, 14, and 15 different people answer in three different surveys, you would find the mean of that for an accurate sample. You could also use a proportion to estimate. 3. Another way to solve a proportion is to do cross multiplication.

Globalization Unit Reflection

Analysis Paste your political cartoon here. What aspect of globalization your cartoon is criticising? (Highlight one) cultural/social              technological/environmental             political/economic Which visual techniques or literary devices (from the list above) did you use in your cartoon? Explain why you used it and why you think it is effective. We used the ship and plane, which are well known ways to visit other countries, as symbols of globalization, to show that America is using globalization to reach other countries. All of the American trash is flowing to clean shores with the ship and the man representing USA that is shooting US ideas at the island is on the ship. Globalization is fueling this process. Other than “globalization”, we also had a label of “US Air Force”. This was mainly for clarity that USA was the one behind this. T...

Sample and Population Videos

Identify Random Sample: Samples are used to make generalization of a group because a census is very time-consuming. Conducting a survey with a sample of the group, you can often get good ideas of what the population itself will say. Generate a Representative Sample: The three types of representative samples, simple random sample, stratified random sample, and systematic random sample. Simple random sample is arbitrary, stratified random sample is making different groups out of the whole (more careful at looking who they choose), and the systematic random sample is random again, but more systematic, like every 3rd person. These methods help come up with a reasonable guess for whatever is being surveyed. Understand Sample Bias: Samples can easily be biased, coming from only people who think in one way. Valid samples have different people with different opinions. For example, if there is a survey on what elementary schoolers do at recess, a biased sample would be only kindergartners,...

Treehugger Post

Image
T-shirts are a common clothing item to wear. Often you'd have one hanging in your closet, crumpled in the basket or folded in your dresser. What many don't know is that making T-shirts are very bad for the environment. Thousands of liters of water are used to make just one, dyes pollute water ways and formaldehyde is still used today in screen printing. Marci Zaroff saw the fashion industries statistics on T-shirts and met up Cas Silver, owner of a tye-dye business. The result was a new idea called MetaWear. MetaWear uses dyes made from seaweed, to help protect the environment, and uses screen printing without formaldehyde. This is one of the only clothing businesses that have an environment-friendly dye, which has big potentials with large T-shirt producers. The seaweed dye, called SeaInk, could be the next step toward us becoming a treehugger. I feel that as issues like global-warming become more prominent, we need to find ways to utilise our plants in better ways to help s...

Poverty Unit Reflection

Image
Poverty is an issue in our world. However, it's not something that we can just stop; in fact, we've struggled with it for generations. In social studies, we are concluding our poverty unit, but that doesn't mean I have to stop there. After donating to a real NGO, I want to continue helping those in poverty. In this unit, here are two things that had a huge impact on me. One of the most impactful lessons was when I found my family's connection to poverty. It really gave me insight into what poverty really was: it's not just some faraway land; it hovers over all of us.  My personal connection to poverty taught me truly how fortunate I am. My grandfather himself had to work his way out of poverty, and it really shocked me to know how different my life could have been. It really matters to me, because it shows how close poverty is to me; just two generations up. This experience has changed me. I now know that I am not above any of these people, that I, in fact, could...

Healthy Snack Reflection

Image
Orange Cranberry Muffin Recipe 1 tablespoon orange zest 1/2 cup orange juice 1 large egg 1/4 cup olive oil 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 1/2 cup honey 1 teaspoon baking powder 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon kosher salt 1/2 cup dried cranberries, chopped Preheat the oven to 375°F Mix the orange zest, orange juice, egg, oil and honey. Add in the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda and salt; whisk to incorporate. Stir in the cranberries. Divide the mixture among the muffin tins, filling the tins about 3/4 full, and bake until the muffins are golden and push back when gently pressed, 20 to 25 minutes. Makes 12 muffins. 1. I thought that my snack was pretty healthy, because I swapped out sugar for honey, had lots of Vitamin C, and checked all ingredient labels. I had no processed sugar, just natural. However, I could have improved the recipe by using whole wheat or almond flour instead of all-purpose flour. Also, it didn't have...

Handphone Plans

Image
The equations for each plan are... b=bill t= text messages m= months Plan A- b= 0.1t + 29.95m Plan B- b= 90.2m Plan C- 0.05t + 49.95m Graph for One Month of Texting a) If you send 500 text messages in one month for each of the plans, what would the costs be? Plan A would cost $79.95, check on the graph and for the equation, it would be $50 added to $29.95 (which is $79.95). Plan B would cost 90.20, because that's how much it costs in one month. You get unlimited text messages in this plan. Plan C would cost $74.95. I checked on the graph, but also, the equation. It's 25 + 49.95 equals 74.95. b) Your boss asks you to visually display three plans and compare them so you can point out the advantages of each plan to your customers. Again, the graph shows how all three of the plans work. All three plans are okay, with their pros and cons, so will say both. Plan A is a good plan because every month, you only have to pay around $30 for...
